Waking the Dead star Complains about "Who"

Veteran actor Trevor Eve has criticised BBC spending on shows such as Doctor Who and Top Gear at the expense of more challenging programming.

The Waking The Dead star claimed that the corporation invests lots of money in certain shows because they can bring in big ratings and commercial opportunities.

Last year, the Doctor Who and Top Gear brands helped BBC Worldwide, the BBC's commercial arm, to achieve record profit of £145.2m, up 36.5% year-on-year, on sales to foreign markets and merchandising such as books and DVDs.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Eve said: "The programme [Doctor Who] is great, but it was created for children in 1963. One doesn't need to say more. They spend a lot of money on Top Gear as well.
